Peak Season
Bharatpur in February
Rajasthan, India
February continues the birding peak. The winter migrants are still present, resident species are entering breeding displays, and the morning light in the jheel (wetland) is golden and clear. Painted storks build nests. Sarus cranes — the world's tallest flying bird — dance.
The February story
February is arguably the finest birding month in India, and Keoladeo is the finest venue. The migrants are still present, the residents are beginning courtship, and the overlap creates maximum species diversity. The painted stork nesting colony — hundreds of nests in a few trees, visible from the park trails — is a controlled chaos of feeding, building, and defending territory. Sarus cranes perform their famous unison call — a trumpeting duet between mated pairs that can be heard across the marsh. February mornings are cool enough for long walks. The cycle-rickshaw guides will take you on three-hour circuits covering the deep marsh, the woodland zones, and the grassland edges. Each habitat holds different species. Bring binoculars (8x42 minimum), a bird guide, and patience. The park entry fee is modest. Photography opportunities are world-class — birds at close range in good light.
