Alwar in January
Rajasthan, India
Go in January — Alwar peaks at 5/5 with cool mornings ideal for tiger safaris and fort exploration, plus minimal crowds.
Peak crowds
January is one of Alwar's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Weekend trippers from Jaipur and Delhi. Sariska tiger reserve has limited daily entries — book ahead in winter.
January is Alwar's best-kept secret. While tourists flock to Jaipur, Alwar sits cool and empty at 10-22°C. Sariska Tiger Reserve is in prime spotting season — dry forests mean tigers come to waterholes. Bhangarh Fort, India's most famous "haunted" ruin, is atmospheric and uncrowded.
The January story
Alwar is only 160km from Delhi, making it one of the easiest heritage-and-wildlife weekend escapes in North India — and January is the month to do it. Sariska Tiger Reserve harbours around 25-28 tigers in 866 sq km of dry deciduous forest. January's cool temperatures mean comfortable open-jeep safaris and active wildlife (spotted deer, wild boar, langur, peafowl, and the tigers that hunt them). Book Zone 1 or 2 for best chances. Bhangarh Fort, 80km south, is a complete abandoned Mughal-era town — temples, bazaar streets, palace ruins — that the Archaeological Survey of India officially closes at sunset. Visit at dawn for the eerie emptiness. The Alwar City Palace has Mughal and Rajput miniature paintings worth an hour. Siliserh Lake makes a perfect sunset stop.
