Bundi in February
Rajasthan, India
Go in February — peak season means clear skies, perfect stepping-well light, and uncrowded access to palace interiors and lakeside walks.
Peak crowds
February is one of Bundi's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Offbeat Rajasthan gem — never truly crowded. Step-wells and palace are peaceful even in peak winter season.
February warms Bundi to 15-26°C. The Nawal Sagar lake reflects Taragarh Fort on still mornings. Bundi's 50+ stepwells — more than any other city in India — are best explored in February when the light drops deep into their geometric interiors. The town that Kipling called "the work of goblins rather than of men" feels exactly that way without summer crowds. Holi preparations begin in the old city.
The February story
February is the connoisseur's Bundi month. The stepwells deserve a full day — start with Raniji ki Baori, then find Nagar Sagar Kund (twin stepwells flanking a gate), Dabhai Kund (the largest), and at least three of the lesser-known ones tucked into residential alleys. Each has unique carvings and geometry. The Chitrashala painting gallery needs 90 minutes minimum — the Krishna Lila panels alone are worth the palace entry. For Holi timing (usually early-mid March), February is when Bundi starts preparing: colour markets stock up, bhang shops prepare their special Holi lassis, and anticipation builds. The old city food scene is basic but authentic: dal bati churma, kachori, and the local speciality of laal maas (red meat curry) at small family restaurants. For painters, Bundi has an active miniature painting school — ask at Chitrashala about workshop visits. Accommodation: Rs 600-1500 for havelis, Rs 2000-4000 for heritage hotels.
