Peak Season
Gulmarg in December
Jammu & Kashmir, India
December transforms Gulmarg overnight. The first heavy snowfall — usually in the first or second week — buries the brown meadow under a white blanket and the ski season officially begins. Temperatures drop to -6°C to 2°C, snowfall averages 80-120cm for the month, and the town comes alive with purpose. Ski rental shops throw open their doors, the gondola runs at full capacity, instructors appear in matching jackets, and the smell of wood smoke and roasting chestnuts fills the cold air. Christmas week brings the first major tourist wave: 20,000-25,000 visitors, a mix of Indian holidaymakers and international skiers.
The December story
Early December can be hit or miss — the snowpack needs a couple of big dumps to become skiable, and some years it doesn't consolidate until mid-month. But by December 20, Gulmarg is reliably in full winter mode. Phase 1 skiing (2,650m to 3,050m) is open and the lower bowl has enough coverage for beginners. Phase 2 to 3,950m opens once the avalanche team clears the upper slopes — usually by the third week. The fresh snow in December tends to be lighter and drier than January's heavier falls, which experienced skiers prefer. Christmas and New Year's Eve in Gulmarg have become a thing — hotels run special dinners, there's a bonfire culture in the evenings, and the combination of fresh snow and holiday energy is genuinely festive. Rates spike for Dec 24-Jan 2 (12,000-20,000 per night) but the rest of December is more reasonable at 7,000-14,000. Book the gondola early — Phase 2 tickets sell out by 8AM even in December. The Srinagar road can close temporarily after heavy snowfall; carry chains and check conditions before driving.
