Fair
Gulmarg in August
Jammu & Kashmir, India
August is Gulmarg's wettest month — 120-160mm of rain across 18-22 days. The meadow is still impossibly green but you'll see it through rain streaks on your hotel window more often than not. Temperatures hold at 11°C to 21°C. Tourist numbers drop sharply to 15,000-20,000 as families head home for school reopening. The Amarnath Yatra (if extended into August) keeps the Srinagar corridor busy. Independence Day (August 15) can bring temporary internet restrictions and heightened security in Kashmir generally. The town feels quieter, damper, and slightly melancholy.
The August story
August is for people who don't mind getting wet and want Gulmarg at its most empty and atmospheric. The meadow in rain has a quality that's hard to describe — the green intensifies to almost neon, cloud fingers reach into the pine forests, and the silence between showers is total. The gondola Phase 2 closes more often than it opens this month — budget for maybe 3-4 operational days per week. Phase 1 is more reliable. The golf course is technically open but the fairways are waterlogged. What works well: short walks between showers, extended restaurant sessions with Kashmiri food, reading by a window with mountain views. Hotel rates start dropping — 6,000-12,000 per night with room to negotiate. The road to Srinagar can have minor landslides from sustained rain; keep buffer time. If you're a mushroom forager or a botanist, August is secretly the best month — the forests around Gulmarg produce morel mushrooms and dozens of medicinal plant species in the wet understory.
