Peak Season
Gulmarg in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
January is peak powder season in Gulmarg and the reason this place exists on every serious skier's bucket list. Temperatures sit between -8°C and 0°C, snowfall averages 120-150cm for the month, and the Gondola Phase 2 takes you to 3,950m where the snow is chest-deep and untouched. The town itself feels like a proper ski village — equipment rental shops line the main road, instructors gather near the gondola base, and wood-fired kangris keep everyone warm. About 15,000-20,000 visitors come through in January, mostly Indian skiing beginners and a growing trickle of international freeriders who've heard the word.
The January story
The skiing here is not resort skiing in the European sense. There are no manicured pistes or snowmaking machines. What you get instead is raw, ungroomed Himalayan powder with 1,500m of vertical drop from Phase 2 top to the base. Beginners stick to the lower bowl near Phase 1 (2,650m to 3,050m) where instructors charge around 1,500-2,000 rupees per session. Advanced skiers and snowboarders head to Phase 2 for backcountry runs through pine forests. Heli-skiing packages run 25,000-40,000 rupees per run. One real warning: Phase 2 top sits at 3,950m and altitude sickness hits fast. Headaches and nausea within 30 minutes are common if you haven't acclimatised. Carry Diamox, drink water, and don't push it on day one. The gondola queue opens at 9AM but locals start lining up by 7:30AM — Phase 2 tickets sell out by 8AM on good snow days.
