Peak Season
Gulmarg in June
Jammu & Kashmir, India
June is when the photos you've seen of Gulmarg were taken. The entire meadow explodes into green — a rolling carpet of grass studded with wild daisies, buttercups, and forget-me-nots stretching to the treeline. Temperatures sit at a perfect 10°C to 20°C. The golf course (world's highest at 2,650m) is fully open. The gondola runs both phases without interruption, and at 3,950m you still find snow patches for that classic snow-in-summer photo. This is the start of peak summer season: 30,000-40,000 visitors, mostly Indian families and honeymooners from the plains escaping 45°C heat.
The June story
June Gulmarg is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in India. The meadow is at its most photogenic, the air is clear, and the surrounding Pir Panjal range still carries enough snow on the peaks to frame every view. A round of golf here costs 500-1,000 rupees and the experience of putting at 2,650m with mountain views on every hole is absurd in the best way. The gondola ride is the main attraction — Phase 1 (15 minutes, 1,500m climb) gives you meadow views, Phase 2 (another 12 minutes to 3,950m) puts you in alpine territory with snow. Queue early: 7:30AM arrival means a 9AM ride; by 10AM the line is 2+ hours. Horse rides to Khilanmarg and Alpather Lake are in full swing (2,000-3,500 rupees). Hotels peak at 8,000-18,000 per night. The one downside: June weekends get genuinely overcrowded, with the meadow feeling more like a mela than a mountain escape. Visit midweek if you can. 4G works perfectly at the base; drops to Edge at Phase 2 top.
