Velavadar in February
Gujarat, India
Go — peak harrier window, full blackbuck visibility, year's best grassland month.
Peak crowds
February is one of Velavadar's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Peak Nov–Feb for blackbuck and migratory birds; Jun–Sep too hot and birds absent.
February is Velavadar's peak harrier-photography month — Montagu's, Pallid, and Marsh harriers all present at the world's largest harrier roost (2,000+ birds), blackbuck herds at full count, and Indian wolves at higher visibility as the grass thins. Cool 12-30C dawn safaris; the Blackbuck Lodge and Blackbuck Safari Lodge at peak operational capacity.
The February story
February extends January's peak — same cool-grassland conditions, harrier-roost congregation reliable through the month, blackbuck herds active in dawn and dusk light. The 1,000+ harriers seen at single-evening roosts are the photographic anchor that international bird photographers travel for. The Indian wolf packs (small, shy, but tracked by Blackbuck Lodge naturalists) reach their highest February visibility. The lesser florican breeds in monsoon (closed park) — February is non-breeding-season for floricans, but the park's grass-and-sky aesthetic peaks. Combine with Saurashtra circuit: Palitana (50km, Jain pilgrimage) and Bhavnagar (55km, Nilambag Palace heritage stay) make this a east-Saurashtra cultural-wildlife week.
