The August story
August is one of two peak-monsoon months at Velavadar where the safari-and-grassland story goes silent. Most lodges close for maintenance through August. The Blackbuck Lodge sometimes opens to slow travellers using Bhavnagar as the Saurashtra-circuit base. Maldhari-equivalent pastoral communities at the park edges continue grazing; commercial visits cease. The lesser florican monsoon breeding (males performing courtship leaps above tall grass) is one of India's rarest bird spectacles — but visitor access is forbidden to protect the breeding population. Sasan Gir (160km west) is also park-closed; the entire east-Saurashtra wildlife corridor sleeps through August.
