Velavadar in April
Gujarat, India
Go for wolf specialists — heat compresses to morning but wolf sightings peak.
April at Velavadar is the heat pivot — 25-38C, blackbuck still active in dawn-dusk windows, Indian wolf packs concentrate on the few surviving water sources making sightings near-peak reliable, but harrier migration has mostly departed. Safari window compresses to 6-9am morning only.
The April story
April is when Velavadar's wolf-tracking story is at its single-best reliability — the small Indian wolf packs concentrate on the 2-3 surviving water sources in the 34 sq km park, and naturalists at the Blackbuck Lodge run dawn drives with high success rates. Blackbuck herds still active in dawn and post-7pm windows. Harriers have largely departed for Central Asia breeding grounds. The trade-off is heat: 38C by 10am, jeep tracks become dust-clouded, and afternoon slots reduced. Lodge pool-and-AC midday rest becomes the rhythm. Photography is at peak performance for those who can handle the heat — wolf-and-blackbuck against dry-grass backgrounds is the iconic Velavadar imagery.
