The June story

Velavadar follows a strict monsoon closure — Jun 16 to Oct 15 each year. The closure protects the lesser florican's monsoon breeding season; the rare bird species (one of fewer than 5 sites on Earth where the florican still breeds) depends on undisturbed tall-grass habitat. Pre-closure June (1-15) operates with brutal heat and humidity; safari operators reduce capacity through the first half. The Blackbuck Lodge maintains skeleton operations for slow travellers; Blackbuck Safari Lodge often closes for maintenance through monsoon. Wildlife travellers should sequence Velavadar for November-March or late October — June represents the last marginal window before the 4-month closure. The lesser florican is technically accessible only by research permit during monsoon (extremely rare, very controlled).
