Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary in February
Gujarat, India
February is Nalsarovar at peak migratory density — book Vekaria Gate boats and Velavadar combo well ahead.
Peak crowds
February is one of Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Peak Nov–Feb when migratory birds arrive for winter; Jun–Aug is too hot for birding with minimal visitors.
February in Nalsarovar is the wetland at full migratory peak. Flamingos, pelicans, white storks and cranes in the thousands, daytime 14-30C, dawn boat launches from Vekaria Gate at peak winter light, and the 120 sq km Ramsar wetland at year-round peak.
The February story
February is Nalsarovar at peak migratory density. The Ramsar wetland holds its largest annual bird congregation — flamingos, pelicans, white storks, painted storks, herons, spoonbills, and other migrants from the Central Asian Flyway are at peak numbers before the March departures back north. Dawn boat rides from Vekaria Gate continue at 5:30am for the cleanest pre-sunrise light over the lotus-covered shallows. Daytime temperatures shift to 14-30C with dry post-monsoon clarity. Forest Department boat operations run at full capacity, but the smart strategy remains booking through Padhar tribal boat operators directly from the eastern wetland edge for closer-to-birds access. Visamo Nalsarovar Resort and Club Azzurro Resort at peak rates with weekend tightness. Sanand base hotels (Hotel Royal Inn) and Padhar tribal homestays provide alternatives. The combination with Velavadar Blackbuck National Park (145 km southeast) — peak harrier roost — makes February the year's smartest two-state birding arc. Mid-February brings the lightest crowds; weekends remain busy with Ahmedabad day-trippers.
