Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary in March
Gujarat, India
Wait — March is shoulder with reduced bird numbers. November-February is the smart peak window.
March in Nalsarovar is the closing window. Days warm to 20-34C, migratory birds largely departed (peak February numbers gone), but resident flamingos and pelicans hold through the month. Dawn boats running, fewer crowds, and the wetland still rewards serious birders before April-May closure.
The March story
March is Nalsarovar's shoulder window. Most migratory birds have departed by mid-March — peak February numbers of flamingos and pelicans drop substantially as Central Asian Flyway migrants head back north. Resident flamingo and pelican populations hold through the month at greatly reduced numbers (visibly fewer than February peaks but still photographically valuable). The wetland's 250+ species drops to its residents-only baseline by month-end. Daytime temperatures climb to 20-34C with strong direct sun on the open water. Dawn boats from Vekaria Gate continue but launch at 5:30-6am only — late-morning operations cease as the wetland heat intensifies. Forest Department canteen and the on-site Visamo and Club Azzurro resorts continue at reduced rates. The combination with Velavadar Blackbuck NP (145 km southeast) shifts as Velavadar's harriers also depart through March. The pragmatic March visit: dawn Vekaria Gate boat, hotel breakfast, midday rest, evening drive back to Sanand or Ahmedabad. For travellers wanting peak-migrant numbers, wait until November-February. For serious birders wanting empty-wetland resident-bird access, March works.
