Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary in April
Gujarat, India
Wait — April Nalsarovar is post-migration. November is the smart restart.
April in Nalsarovar is wind-down. Days hit 25-38C, the wetland shrinks under pre-summer evaporation, flamingos mostly departed and only resident waders remain. Dawn boats continue but the photographic reward drops sharply compared to peak migratory windows.
The April story
April is Nalsarovar's wind-down month. Most flamingos and pelicans have departed by April with the Central Asian Flyway migration complete, and only resident waders, a small number of pelicans, and reduced flamingo numbers remain. Daytime temperatures climb to 25-38C, the wetland begins its annual shrinkage as pre-summer evaporation reduces water levels, and the open-water surface reflects heat upward making midday boat rides uncomfortable. Dawn boats from Vekaria Gate continue at 5:30am but launch only on weekday low-traffic days. Forest Department operations reduce. Visamo Nalsarovar Resort and Club Azzurro Resort operate at reduced occupancy and lower rates. The honest April rule: serious birders skip the standard wetland visit entirely and focus on resident-species photography in adjacent Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary (12 km from Jamnagar, 220 km west) which continues to hold meaningful resident bird density through summer. For Nalsarovar-priority travellers, wait until November. The single April compensation is the rare sight of resident flamingos at very low water levels providing close-range photography, but the heat penalty makes this a specialist proposition.
