Kasol in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
Icy trails make nearby hikes risky; thermal springs are the main draw, not trekking
February Kasol is still deep in winter's grip, but the first signs of thaw appear by month's end. Temperatures range from -1°C to 10°C. Most cafes remain closed or running limited menus — you might find 3-4 operating versus the 20+ of peak season. Snowfall is actually more likely in February than January at this elevation, and when it hits, the village transforms into something genuinely beautiful for 48-72 hours before turning to brown slush. The Bhuntar road occasionally gets blocked after heavy snow; carry chains or be prepared to wait. The backpacker crowd is still absent. Parvati River stays low.
The February story
Late February is when Kasol starts to wake up. The first almond blossoms appear in the lower valley around the 20th. A few more cafes test the waters with weekend openings. Room rates are still rock-bottom: ₹500-800 range. The air has a bite that makes hot chai feel medicinal. If you time a visit with a fresh snowfall, the pine forests above the village are spectacular — white-dusted deodar cedars against blue sky, river running dark below. The trek to Chalal (30 minutes) is safe year-round and the village is completely empty. Kheerganga remains an icy proposition. The drug culture that puts many visitors off is completely dormant — too cold, too few people. This gives February Kasol a cleanliness that peak season lacks. Jio connectivity holds. But the honest assessment: you're visiting a place running at 15% capacity and hoping the scenery compensates. For most people, it won't be enough.
