Caution
Kasol in August
Himachal Pradesh, India
August continues July's monsoon nightmare with one addition: the Parvati River reaches its annual maximum. Rainfall stays at 200-250mm. Landslides on the Bhuntar road are at their most frequent — the saturated hillsides have been absorbing water for two months and the soil gives way without warning. The river is so high it sometimes floods the lower guesthouses near the bridge. Temperatures are comfortable (14-23°C) and the greenery is extraordinary, but you can't enjoy scenery from inside a stranded vehicle. Most of Kasol's economy is shut. The backpacker community is gone.
The August story
August is marginally less terrible than July only because the monsoon sometimes pauses for 3-5 day dry spells in the second half. These breaks reveal a Kasol that's startlingly beautiful — every surface is moss-covered, waterfalls pour off every cliff, the air smells of wet pine and earth, and the Parvati Valley corridor is the most intense green you'll see in India. If you happen to catch a dry window, the village with its 10-15 remaining tourists has a post-apocalyptic calm. Room rates are at annual lows: ₹300-500. The few open cafes serve whoever walks in like old friends. But this beauty comes packaged with genuine danger. The Parvati River has claimed lives in August flood surges. The road can close for days, not hours. Late August sometimes teases with pre-autumn clearing, but it's unreliable. Our advice matches July: don't plan a trip here this month. If you're already in Himachal and conditions allow a day visit with your own vehicle, it can be transcendent. But don't bank on it.
