Fair
Gulmarg in April
Jammu & Kashmir, India
April is Gulmarg's worst month and everyone locally will tell you so. The snow is melting into grey slush, the meadows haven't greened yet, and the gondola is often shut for annual maintenance (usually the first two weeks). Temperatures range from 2°C to 10°C — too warm for snow, too cold for flowers. The town feels half-closed: ski rental shops are shuttering, summer restaurants haven't opened, and hotel staff are on break between seasons. Visitor numbers drop to maybe 5,000-8,000 for the entire month. This is the definition of between-seasons dead zone.
The April story
There is almost no reason to visit Gulmarg in April unless you're a local or have very specific business. The roads are muddy from snowmelt, the famous meadow is brown and soggy, and the views are often obscured by low cloud and haze. If you do end up here — maybe as a transit stop between Srinagar and somewhere else — the one upside is rock-bottom hotel pricing (3,000-5,000 per night for rooms that cost 12,000 in February). The Srinagar road (50km) can have minor landslides from snowmelt loosening the hillside, adding unpredictable delays. Phase 2 of the gondola is definitely closed; Phase 1 may operate on weekends only. If you're set on Kashmir in April, go to Srinagar instead — the tulip garden is in full bloom, Dal Lake is coming alive, and there's actually something to do. Gulmarg needs another month to wake up.
