Gulmarg in November
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Ski season hasn't begun yet, so slopes are closed and snow coverage is unpredictable
November is Gulmarg's other awkward month, the mirror image of April. Autumn colour has faded, the meadow is grey-brown, and snow hasn't arrived in meaningful quantities. Temperatures sit at -3°C to 6°C — cold enough to be uncomfortable, not cold enough for skiing. The town is in pre-winter limbo: summer businesses have closed, ski operations haven't started, and the gondola runs on reduced schedule. Maybe 5,000-8,000 visitors come through, mostly passing through rather than staying. Grey skies dominate. It's honest but it's bleak.
The November story
November Gulmarg tests your patience and rewards almost none of it. The first snowfalls arrive — usually light, 20-40cm total — but they melt partially and refreeze into icy patches that make paths treacherous without adding any beauty. The gondola Phase 2 closes for pre-winter maintenance and safety checks. Phase 1 runs sporadically. The golf course is long shut. Restaurants operate on skeleton hours. The one genuine upside: this is the cheapest month of the year. Hotels drop to 3,000-5,000 per night and you might be the only guest. If you're a writer or need absolute solitude, there's something to be said for a mountain town in its emptiest, rawest state. The Srinagar road is fine but can get icy on the final climb to Gulmarg in early mornings. If you must visit Kashmir in November, Srinagar is the better call — the late autumn over Dal Lake has a haunting beauty that actually justifies the cold. Gulmarg needs December's proper snowfall to come alive again.
