Good Time
Gulmarg in October
Jammu & Kashmir, India
October paints Gulmarg in full autumn colour. The chinar trees around the meadow go red and gold, the birch forests on the upper slopes turn bright yellow, and the first serious frost arrives. Temperatures drop to 2°C to 12°C — winter coats come out. The meadow grass has dried to a tawny brown that looks stunning against the coloured trees. Visitor numbers pick up slightly to 15,000-20,000 as leaf-peepers and photographers arrive. The gondola runs both phases, and Phase 2 top gets its first light snowfall by late October, dusting the peaks white while the valleys below are still in autumn.
The October story
October is Gulmarg's most underrated month. The autumn colour here rivals anything in New England or Kyoto, but without the crowds or the price tag. The walk from the gondola base to Khilanmarg through mixed forest — pine, birch, chinar — is a masterclass in seasonal colour. Mornings are crisp and clear with frost on the meadow grass that melts into dew by 10AM. The golf course closes by mid-October as the ground hardens, so get your rounds in early. The gondola Phase 2 delivers increasingly dramatic views as the snow line creeps lower each week. By late October, you might ride up into genuine snowfall at 3,950m. Hotel rates are solidly shoulder-season: 5,000-9,000 per night. The Srinagar road is dry but gets dark early, so plan returns before 5PM. Evening temperatures demand proper winter gear — 2°C with wind chill feels much colder. The town starts its slow pivot toward winter: ski shops begin displaying equipment, hotels turn on the heating, and the conversation shifts from "wasn't the meadow beautiful" to "when's the first real snow."
