Gulmarg in May
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Go in May — spring meadows are blooming, gondola reveals Nanga Parbat clearly, and daytime warmth (8–20°C) makes hiking pleasant, though evenings still dip cold.
May is when Gulmarg starts waking up, though it's still rubbing its eyes. The snow line retreats above 3,200m, and the lower meadows begin their transformation from brown to tentative green. Temperatures climb to 6°C to 15°C — genuinely pleasant during the day, cold at night. The gondola reopens fully (both phases) and the first wave of summer tourists arrives, mostly Indian families on school break. Expect 15,000-20,000 visitors. Wildflowers haven't peaked yet, but the first crocuses and buttercups push through, and the air smells like wet earth and pine.
The May story
May is a transition month that rewards patience. The meadow isn't the green carpet you've seen in photos — that's June onwards — but the mix of residual snow patches, early wildflowers, and emerging green is its own kind of beautiful. Phase 2 of the gondola takes you to snow that's still 2-3 feet deep at 3,950m, giving you the surreal experience of standing in snow while looking down at green valleys. The golf course (the world's highest green golf course at 2,650m) starts setting up but doesn't officially open until late May or early June. Horse rides to Khilanmarg resume and cost 1,500-2,500 rupees return. Hotels are at summer-opening rates — 5,000-10,000 per night — significantly cheaper than peak summer or peak winter. The road from Srinagar is clear and dry. One thing to know: May weather is unpredictable. You might get a random snowfall at higher altitudes or a warm spell that feels like June. Pack layers.
