Good Time
Gangotri in June
Uttarakhand, India
June is peak Char Dham season at Gangotri. The temple is fully operational, the bazaar buzzes with pilgrims and trekkers, and the Gaumukh trek is at its most accessible (snow patches mostly melted). Temperatures at 8-18°C are pleasant. Pre-monsoon weeks (early June) offer the best trekking conditions â clear skies, firm trails, and the glacier visible from a distance. Late June brings first monsoon clouds.
The June story
Early June (first two weeks) offers the best trekking window of the year. The Gaumukh trail is clear of major snow, the glacier face is visible, and the weather holds most days. The glacier itself is retreating at approximately 22 metres per year â what you see today is smaller than what existed a decade ago, which adds urgency to the visit. Beyond Gaumukh, the Tapovan meadow (4463m) is accessible for experienced trekkers â a high-altitude grassland with Shivling peak views that mountaineers consider one of India's most beautiful campsites. The Gangotri temple in June is at peak pilgrim flow â expect queues for darshan and crowded bazaar. Accommodation books out: reserve 2-3 weeks ahead. Late June monsoon arrival changes everything: clouds descend, trail conditions deteriorate, and the trek becomes risky. If flying into Dehradun, the Rishikesh-Uttarkashi-Gangotri road takes 10-12 hours and is an experience in itself â every turn reveals deeper Himalayan geography.
