May opens Gangotri. The temple doors open on Akshaya Tritiya (date varies by Hindu calendar, usually early May) with elaborate ceremony. The murti returns from Mukhba. Pilgrims flood in. The Char Dham yatra season begins. Temperatures hover at 5-15°C. The Gaumukh trek (18km one-way) opens, though snow patches persist. The town — population 500 in summer, zero in winter — springs to life overnight.
The May story
The temple opening ceremony is worth witnessing if you can time it. The murti's procession from Mukhba to Gangotri, carried on a palanquin through cheering crowds with music and incense, is Hindu pilgrimage at its most emotionally concentrated. The first days after opening are intensely crowded and deeply spiritual. For the Gaumukh trek (18km one-way, 2 days recommended), register at the Uttarkashi forest office (mandatory, Rs 50 Indian / Rs 350 foreign, porter required). The trail follows the Bhagirathi river through pine and birch forest to the glacier snout at 3892m. May conditions: snow patches on trail, river crossings manageable, views variable (pre-monsoon haze some days). Carry all food for the trek — Bhojbasa camp (14km) has basic shelter only. Altitude: Gangotri is 3100m, Gaumukh is 3892m — acclimatise properly. Night temperatures near the glacier: -5 to 0°C even in May. This is serious trekking, not a day walk.
