Gangotri in April
Uttarakhand, India
Road clearing delays mean you'll likely arrive to find the temple still closed and facilities shuttered
April sees serious road-clearing operations as BRO pushes through snow drifts on the Gangotri highway. The lower Bhagirathi valley thaws. Snowmelt swells the river. By late April, the road may open for government vehicles, but the temple opening date (Akshaya Tritiya, usually early May) hasn't arrived. Advance trekkers sometimes reach the area in late April but infrastructure is zero.
The April story
Late April is for advance scouts only — those who want to be at Gangotri the day the road opens. The temple won't be open, but the valley in early spring — snow melting, river swelling, pine forests waking up — has a raw beauty that the pilgrim season overlays. If the road is passable (check BRO updates), you can drive to Gangotri and stay at the government rest house (if caretaker is present). The Gaumukh trek is not advisable in April — snow bridges are unstable and trail markers are buried. Use April for Uttarkashi exploration and highway acclimatisation. The Dayara Bugyal trek (from Barsu, near Uttarkashi) is sometimes accessible by late April and is a stunning alpine meadow alternative. Plan the actual Gangotri visit for after the May temple opening.
