Gangotri in November
Uttarakhand, India
November closes Gangotri. The temple doors shut on Diwali day with a ceremony that draws the last pilgrims and priests. The murti transfers to Mukhba. Snow begins accumulating. The road closes within days of the temple closing. By mid-November, Gangotri is abandoned — a ghost town at 3100m that won't see human habitation until May. The silence after the last vehicle leaves is absolute.
The November story
Early November might find Gangotri just barely accessible if Diwali fell late, but functionally this is a closed month. The temple has shut, the town has evacuated, and snow is accumulating. The road closes shortly after the last pilgrims leave. If you missed October's closing ceremony, there's nothing to see or do. The Uttarkashi-Gangotri road becomes impassable by mid-November. For winter Himalayan experiences in the region, Uttarkashi (1150m) operates year-round, and the Dodital trek from Uttarkashi is sometimes possible in early November. But Gangotri itself is done until May. Start planning next year's Char Dham yatra now — the season books up increasingly fast.
