Gangotri in January
Uttarakhand, India
January Gangotri is closed. The temple shuts in November (on Diwali) and the entire town evacuates to Mukhba village (25km downhill). At 3100m, the Bhagirathi valley is buried under snow. The road from Uttarkashi is impassable. The Ganga's source — Gaumukh glacier, 18km beyond Gangotri — is under metres of ice. Nothing operates. The valley sleeps until May.
The January story
Do not attempt to visit Gangotri in January. The road is buried under snow, the town is evacuated, and rescue would be extremely difficult. If you're drawn to the Gangotri area in winter, visit Uttarkashi (100km downhill, 1150m), which operates year-round and has the Vishwanath temple and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. For the spiritually motivated, Mukhba village (where the Gangotri murti winters) is accessible by trek from Harsil and offers a rare glimpse of the temple's mobile worship tradition. But Gangotri itself is off-limits. Plan for May-October. The Char Dham yatra registration opens online months in advance — book early for May-June.
