Gangotri in March
Uttarakhand, India
March begins the slow thaw but Gangotri remains closed. Snow starts melting on lower slopes while upper reaches stay frozen. The BRO (Border Roads Organisation) begins clearing the Uttarkashi-Gangotri highway. Avalanche danger persists, especially on south-facing slopes warming in spring sun. Gaumukh glacier is still winter-locked. The earliest the road might open is late April; usually it's early May.
The March story
March is preparation month. If you're planning a May-June Gangotri visit, March is when to: register for Char Dham yatra online (mandatory biometric registration started 2023), book accommodation in Gangotri (limited, basic, fills fast), arrange the Gaumukh trek permit (available from Uttarkashi forest office), and plan transport from Rishikesh or Haridwar. The Gangotri highway is 290km from Rishikesh, taking 10-12 hours in good conditions. Accommodation at Gangotri is ashram-basic (Rs 300-800) or government rest house. No luxury options exist. Carry warm clothing for 5-15°C temperatures even in May-June. Altitude sickness is a consideration at 3100m — acclimatise in Uttarkashi (1150m) for a night before ascending.
