Roopkund in June
Uttarakhand, India
Go in June—wildflowers carpet the bugyals and Skeleton Lake is snow-free, but book guides weeks ahead and expect crowds at this 5/5-rated month.
Peak crowds
June is one of Roopkund's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Trek groups limited by operators. Sep-Oct has best weather for the skeleton lake.
June is prime Roopkund month — the trail is at maximum accessibility before monsoon. The skeleton lake reveals itself as snow melts: scattered bones and skulls from a 9th-century mass death event visible in the glacial water. Bedni and Ali Bugyal are carpeted in flowers. The Trishul massif (7,120m) dominates the horizon. Pre-monsoon weather windows are the key — clear mornings, afternoon clouds. Book with reputable operators (Indiahikes, YHAI, Trek the Himalayas).
The June story
June is when the skeleton lake fully reveals itself. As snow retreats, the bones become visible in the shallow, clear water — skulls, long bones, fragments, scattered across the lake bed and surrounding rocks. The sight is haunting: these were real people, many in their 30s-40s based on analysis, killed so suddenly that their remains stayed together for over a millennium. The Trishul (7,120m) massif as backdrop elevates this from grim to profound. The trek itself is demanding but June conditions are the most forgiving: less snow than May, not yet monsoon. Pre-monsoon clouds build by 1-2pm, so summit the lake by noon. The Chandrashila view from near Tungnath (if you detour) is extraordinary. June first two weeks are the sweet spot — after mid-June, monsoon approaches make the upper trail unpredictable.
