Peak crowds
May is one of Dharamshala's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Peak Mar–May for spring + cricket season; Oct for post-monsoon clarity. Monsoon Jun–Aug is quiet.
May is hot for a hill station — 16-30°C — and Dharamshala feels it at 1,457m. The lower town bakes by afternoon while evenings stay pleasant. Pre-monsoon haze reduces the Dhauladhar views on most days. Tourist numbers stay high (50,000-60,000) as plains families flee 45°C heat in Delhi and Punjab. This is escape-the-heat tourism, not destination tourism. Water supply can get stressed.
The May story
May Dharamshala is honestly a compromise — you come here because Chandigarh is 38°C and Delhi is 44°C, and 30°C in the hills feels like relief. That said, the evenings are genuinely beautiful. Sunset from the HPCA stadium viewing area, when the Dhauladhar peaks catch the last orange light above the haze, still delivers. The Kangra tea second flush is being processed — not as prized as first flush but the factory shops sell it fresh and it is excellent. Masroor Temple in May requires an early morning visit (before 9 AM) to avoid the heat. Kangra Fort is best at dawn or late afternoon. The Norbulingka Institute's gardens are in full bloom — the Tibetan-style landscaping with roses and bougainvillea is worth an hour. Local mangoes arrive from the lower Kangra Valley — Dharamshala gets them before Delhi does. Hotel rates hold at peak level but availability is better than April. The civil hospital handles heat-related issues routinely. Stay hydrated — the altitude-plus-heat combination catches people off guard.
