Dharamshala in June
Himachal Pradesh, India
June is pre-monsoon in Dharamshala — hot and increasingly humid (18-32°C), with thunderstorms building almost daily by late afternoon. The monsoon front usually arrives between June 15-25, and when it hits, it hits hard. Dharamshala and the broader Kangra region receive some of the heaviest rainfall in Himachal (total monsoon: 2,500-3,000mm). Tourist numbers drop to 25,000-30,000. Some trekking routes close. Roads start getting dicey.
The June story
Early June (before the monsoon breaks) is the last window for dry outdoor exploration. Once the monsoon arrives, Dharamshala enters a different mode entirely. The positive: everything turns impossibly green within days. Waterfalls appear on every hillside. The Dhauladhar range disappears behind cloud but when it breaks through after a rain shower, the freshly washed peaks against dark monsoon clouds are dramatic. The HPCA stadium in rain has its own mood. Kangra tea gardens are lush and the monsoon flush starts processing — this tea is robust and used in blends. Masroor Rock Cut Temple in the rain, with water running through its 8th-century channels, shows how the original architects designed for monsoon drainage — genuinely fascinating. Hotel prices drop 20-30%. The risk: landslides on the Pathankot road increase sharply after the monsoon begins. The Dharamshala-Mandi road is more reliable. Hospital access holds but ambulance response on blocked roads is a real concern. Carry a rain jacket and waterproof phone case — not optional.
