Dharamshala in July
Himachal Pradesh, India
Monsoon rains make treks dangerous with slippery paths and heavy leech activity
July is full monsoon and Dharamshala gets hammered — 600-800mm of rain this month alone, sometimes 200mm in a single day. Temperatures are 18-28°C but the humidity makes it feel hotter. Landslides on the Pathankot-Dharamshala road are near-guaranteed at least twice this month. The Kangra Valley is submerged in green and cloud. Tourist numbers fall to 15,000-20,000, mostly stranded rather than planned. The HPCA stadium sits empty under rain.
The July story
Let me be straight: July Dharamshala is not a holiday — it is an experience you endure or embrace, no middle ground. The rain is relentless — not gentle English drizzle but full Himalayan monsoon that comes sideways and floods streets in 20 minutes. But the people who come on purpose swear by it. The waterfalls around Bhagsu (above town) go from trickles to thundering cascades. The cloud forest above Dharamshala drips with moss and ferns — it looks like a Miyazaki film. Leeches appear on trails, so wear proper shoes. The Kangra Art Museum is a perfect rain-day retreat — you can spend 2 hours with the miniature paintings and nobody will interrupt you. The Norbulingka Institute workshops continue through monsoon and the indoor craft demonstrations are excellent. Street food in the bazaar thrives — hot pakoras and chai every 10 metres. Hotels practically beg for guests — 40-50% off peak rates, sometimes more. The civil hospital operates but road access to it matters if a landslide blocks your route. Keep your phone charged and carry cash — power cuts happen.
