Barren Island in February
Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India
Go in February—calmest seas make the boat crossing safest, but prepare for extreme conditions: toxic air, unstable ground, and zero infrastructure once ashore.
Peak crowds
February is one of Barren Island's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Extreme-tourism destination accessible Dec–Mar; rough seas and monsoon (Jun–Sep) prevent boat access entirely.
Barren Island in February is the cleanest version of the volcano dive cruise. Rainfall on the crossing route is under 15mm for the month, the Andaman Sea is at year-low swell, and underwater visibility at the four named sites runs 30-40 metres. Air 24-30C, water 27-28C. Live-aboards from Havelock and Port Blair run weekly slots; Lacadives and Barefoot Dive sell out 3-4 weeks ahead at peak rates of 90,000 to 1,30,000 rupees per head for a 3-night charter. The volcano cone steam-plumes most days. Advanced open-water certification minimum; nitrox endorsement standard. There is no landing permitted - all activity is boat-based. Forest Department permits are bundled with the operator booking.
