The Gurdwara-run sarai at Ghangaria offers free dorm-style accommodation to every pilgrim — Sikh or not. Clean blankets provided; communal washrooms. No advance booking; turns up and registers.

Eat before the descent, not after arrival — the langar opens early and the hot khichdi at altitude does more for your stamina than any energy bar. Sip the tea slowly; gulping at 4600m can trigger nausea.

Arrive the night before your trek and sleep in the gurudwara dorm — saves a hotel night and gets you onto the trail by 5am, which is the difference between making Hemkund-and-back in one day or splitting into two.

Order packed parathas the night before — kitchen wraps them in foil for the trek. 5am breakfast service starts only if you tell reception by 9pm; otherwise it kicks in at 6:30am. No alcohol; this is gurudwara town.

Order dal-rice or thali at lunch (cooked in volume, freshest); avoid the Chinese after 7pm when the kitchen winds down. Pakoras with chai at 4pm — the standard Ghangaria ritual after returning from the Valley of Flowers.

The glacial lake beside the Gurdwara — pilgrims take a ritual dip in its near-freezing waters. Seven peaks ring the lake, giving the destination its 'Hemkund' (lake of snow) name.
Star-shaped Sikh shrine at 4,329m, commemorating Guru Gobind Singh's previous incarnation per the Dasam Granth. Open late May to early October; winters are snowbound.
