June is peak before the monsoon. The Jai Valley and Chinta Valley are at their greenest, the town buzzes with domestic tourists escaping Jammu's heat, and the meadows around Padri Pass are carpeted with wildflowers. The annual Mela Patt celebration may fall in June.

Seasonal camp at the famous Padri meadow (2400m). Wake up in a tent surrounded by wildflowers and horses grazing. Run by local youth group — basic but clean tents with meals included. The star-gazing here is Ladakh-level.

Active mainly during winter (Dec-Feb snow season) and busy weekends — stalls also operate at Qilla and the New Bus Stand when Guldanda is snowed out. Ask for Anuradha Katal's stall, named in the PTI piece, if you want the rajma-rice combo.

Non-residents can book lunch via the front desk, but call the day before — the kitchen scales to occupancy. Ask whether kalari kulcha is on; the cheese is from neighbouring Udhampur and not always in stock.

Call ahead before driving up the Punaja road for a non-resident lunch — the kitchen runs to resident demand and prefers a heads-up. The view from the dining room is the reason to come; pick a window table.

Stick to the kathi rolls — that's what built the chain. The biryani is competent but the rolls are why locals queue at lunch on weekends when day-trippers from Jammu come up.
