Valley of Flowers in April
Uttarakhand, India
April: the Govindghat area thaws. The trail to Ghangaria begins clearing at lower elevations. The valley itself is under snow. The Forest Department begins seasonal preparations — trail maintenance, bridge repair, permit systems. No access to the valley. The approach road from Joshimath to Govindghat may open.
The April story
Closed. April is the month to book. Ghangaria accommodation fills for July-August by April-May. The GMVN guesthouse is bookable online (gmvn.gov.in). Private guesthouses often require phone booking. The valley's growing Instagram popularity means what was once a botanist's secret is now a mainstream destination — 2023 saw the highest visitor numbers ever. Early July or late September offer fewer crowds. The daily visitor cap (enforced by Forest Department) limits numbers but Ghangaria's accommodation is the real constraint. The fitness requirement is moderate but real: 13km uphill on Day 1, 7.4km round trip in the valley on Day 2, 13km downhill on Day 3. The altitude (3,048m at Ghangaria, 3,658m in the valley) causes headaches in 30-40% of visitors. Diamox helps. Carry rain gear — monsoon is a guarantee in July-August.
