Valley of Flowers in February
Uttarakhand, India
February: maximum snow depth. The valley is invisible under white. The Pushpawati River that flows through it is frozen. The approach trail, the base camp at Ghangaria, and the valley entrance are all buried. No access is possible or advisable. The flowers are seeds and roots, sleeping.
The February story
Closed. Research time. The Valley of Flowers has been studied by botanists since Smythe's 1931 discovery. Key species: Brahma Kamal (Saussurea obvallata — the sacred lotus of the Himalayas, blooms July-August), Blue Poppy (Meconopsis aculeata — the valley's most photographed flower), Cobra Lily (Arisaema), and hundreds of orchid, primula, potentilla, and saxifrage species. The botanical diversity in 87 sq km rivals sites many times larger. The valley's shape — a gentle glacial cradle between 3,200m and 6,675m (Gauri Parbat summit) — creates microclimates that support different species at different elevations. The Pushpawati River runs through the centre. Brown bears, langurs, and musk deer inhabit the area. The trek combines physical effort, botanical wonder, and spiritual weight (Hemkund Sahib gurdwara is just above Ghangaria). Book July-August for peak bloom.
