Caution
Spiti Valley in March
Himachal Pradesh, India
March in Spiti is winter reluctantly loosening its grip. Temperatures climb to -5 to 8°C — still cold, but the sun feels genuinely warm between 11 AM and 3 PM. The Kunzum Pass remains firmly closed under metres of snow. The Kinnaur route is your only access, and it's arguably at its most treacherous now: daytime warmth destabilizes snow, causing afternoon avalanches and rockfalls. The road between Nako and Tabo sees regular disruptions. Kaza is accessible but services remain minimal. Snow leopard season is winding down as the cats move to higher elevations.
The March story
March is an in-between month with limited specific appeal. The dramatic white-on-white winter aesthetic is breaking down — snow is patchy and dirty at lower elevations while still thick at higher ones. The approach road is at peak danger as the freeze-thaw cycle creates unstable conditions. That said, if you're already in the valley (perhaps wrapping up a snow leopard expedition), March has moments. The afternoon sun on Key Monastery's whitewashed walls against a still-snowy backdrop is beautiful. Tabo's ancient murals are visible year-round and the lack of any other visitors means the monks may offer a personal tour. Early spring birds start appearing — you'll see lammergeier (bearded vulture) riding thermals above the valley. Kaza's few open eateries serve hearty Spitian winter food. But honestly, unless you have a specific reason to be here, March is a month to skip.
