Spiti Valley in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
February continues January's deep freeze with one addition: the snow leopard tracking season is at its peak. Temperatures stay at -15 to -20°C at night, warming to maybe -5 to 5°C in afternoon sun. Kunzum Pass remains impassable. The Kinnaur road is your only option, and it requires checking conditions daily — a single landslide or heavy snowfall can block it for days. Kaza has the bare essentials: a few open homestays, a handful of dhabas serving dal-rice and thukpa, and that single ATM that may or may not work.
The February story
February is the month that defines Spiti's emerging reputation as a snow leopard destination. Operators based in Kibber and Langza run multi-day tracking expeditions with local spotters who know every ledge and ridge where the cats shelter. Sighting rates in a 5-7 day expedition run around 60-70% in a good February. Beyond snow leopards, the valley's winter isolation has its own fierce beauty. The Spiti River is frozen in sections, creating ice formations that gleam turquoise in morning light. Pin Valley National Park is under snow but the ibex and bharal herds are visible on cleared slopes. Dhankar Monastery, perched above the frozen confluence of Pin and Spiti rivers, looks like something from a fantasy novel. Community life continues in the villages — butter tea in a Spitian kitchen with a bukhari stove is one of the most genuinely warm travel experiences you'll have. Just not warm in the temperature sense.
