Spiti Valley in December
Himachal Pradesh, India
December Spiti is as remote as mainland India gets. Kunzum Pass is under deep snow. The Kinnaur route from Shimla is technically the only access, but sections between Nako and Tabo ice over completely, and BRO crews are on reduced winter schedules. A fresh snowfall can close this road for days. Kaza sits at -15 to 0°C, with nights regularly hitting -20°C or colder. The town's permanent population hunkers down. Two or three guesthouses may accept guests, but don't count on heating beyond a bukhari stove and extra blankets. The ATM is unreliable. Power cuts are routine.
The December story
December Spiti exists for a tiny handful of travellers: snow leopard expedition teams staging for the January-February tracking season, researchers, and the genuinely adventurous who find beauty in extreme isolation. The valley under snow is stark and magnificent — the brown desert mountains draped in white, the Spiti River frozen in sections, Key Monastery looking like it belongs in a Tibetan painting. The silence is total. On clear nights, the stargazing at 3,800m with zero light pollution is staggering — the Milky Way is a physical presence across the sky. Village life is intimate and inward — if you're invited into a Spitian home for butter tea and thukpa, accept without hesitation. Losar preparations begin in some villages toward month's end. Practically: this is genuine survival territory. Your vehicle needs snow chains. Your body needs layers rated to -25°C. Your phone will die in minutes outdoors. Carry medication for everything — altitude sickness, cold-related illness, gastrointestinal issues. Kaza's clinic has a doctor but limited supplies. Make sure someone outside the valley knows your itinerary.
