The March story
March is when Pangong begins its annual transformation from frozen plain to liquid colour palette, but the process is too early for visitors. The Chang La clearing effort is heroic—BRO crews work at 5360m to push snow off a road that serves strategic military purpose first and tourism second. The lake ice, weeks from breaking, develops cracks that sound like distant thunder as the sun warms the surface by fractions of degrees. The Changpa move their herds to new grazing areas. The mountains begin losing their snow cover from south-facing slopes first. March Pangong is a promise, not a destination. Plan your visit for May at the earliest.
