Pangong Tso in February
Ladakh, India
Road remains snow-blocked and the lake's frozen surface defeats the iconic blue-water appeal
February keeps Pangong frozen and unreachable. The lake ice thickens. Temperatures: -28°C to -12°C. Chang La is buried. The Changpa herders and their pashmina goats represent the only warm-blooded life for kilometres. The silence of a frozen lake at 4350m in February is the sound of the earth holding its breath.
The February story
February Pangong exists in the same suspended state as January. The frozen lake surface, when wind-swept clear of snow, reveals ice of extraordinary clarity—you can see to the bottom in places. The mountains show their geological layers most clearly in winter: red, brown, ochre, and grey bands of ancient seabed thrust skyward millions of years ago. The China border, unmarked on the frozen lake, is a geopolitical abstraction in this natural vastness. The army maintains its positions with quiet professionalism. The Changpa families, whose pashmina goats produce the world's finest cashmere fibre, are among the last true nomads in India. None of this is accessible to tourists in February. The description serves to honour a place too often reduced to a Bollywood photo-op.
