The December story
December Pangong is the ultimate expression of a place that exists independently of human attention. The frozen lake, 134 km of ice at 4350m, is one of the great natural facts of the Indian subcontinent. The mountains surrounding it, unchanged by millennia of freezing and thawing, hold the border between two nuclear-armed nations with the same indifference they hold the cold. Nobody visits. Nobody should. The description of December Pangong is not an invitation—it's an acknowledgment that some places are bigger than our desire to see them. When you visit in June, remember that the lake you're photographing was this in December. That context makes the summer colours even more precious.
