Nako in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
Roads stay blocked for weeks when snow closes the sole mountain pass through Kinnaur
January Nako is buried under snow at 3662m in upper Kinnaur, close to the Tibetan border. Temperatures: -20°C to -5°C. The famous Nako Lake freezes solid—locals walk across it. The 11th-century monastery, one of Spiti-Kinnaur's oldest, continues its winter prayers with perhaps 5 monks in residence. The village of 500 people is sealed from the outside world when heavy snow blocks the road.
The January story
Winter Nako is among the most extreme village experiences in Himachal Pradesh. The frozen lake, surrounded by bare poplar trees and backed by brown-and-white mountains, looks like a Tibetan plateau settlement—because culturally, it essentially is. The monastery's murals, painted nearly 1000 years ago and showing Buddhist figures in Kashmiri-Tibetan style, are the real treasure—accessible if you can find the key-holding monk. The village houses, built of stone and wood with flat roofs for drying apricots (in season), are huddled together for warmth. There is no hotel—one or two homestays remain operational. The road from Pooh (30 km) is the only access and may be closed for days after snowfall. This is not tourism. This is visiting a living fossil of trans-Himalayan culture.
