Nako in August
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in August — Nako is dry and clear at 3662m with mild daytime temperatures, ideal for acclimatization and lake walks, though nights still drop near freezing.
August continues Nako's dry, warm summer. Temperatures: 10-22°C. The village is at maximum activity: apricot harvest continues, the monastery hosts visiting scholars and pilgrims, and the lake reflects clear blue skies that monsoon-trapped travelers elsewhere envy. The Hindustan-Tibet Highway is in good condition.
The August story
August Nako is high-altitude summer at its most livable. The lake, warmed by summer sun, is almost swimmable (locals dare—visitors usually don't at this temperature). The village's community hall sometimes hosts cultural events: traditional Kinnauri dances, song, and competitions. The Kinnauri cap (a distinctive green-and-red flat-topped hat) is sold at the small village shop—a genuine souvenir. The monastery's summer pujas are elaborate, with visiting monks augmenting the small resident community. August Independence Day passes with a simple flag ceremony and school children singing the national anthem in this border village where national identity is not abstract—the Chinese border is 30 km away. The drive onward to Tabo (45 km) leads to perhaps the most important monastery in the western Himalayas.
