Caution
Nako in November
Himachal Pradesh, India
November shuts Nako down. The lake begins freezing. Temperatures: -10°C to 2°C. Snow may fall at any time. The road from the highway becomes treacherous. All but one or two homestays close. The monastery enters winter schedule. The village of 500 prepares to survive another Himalayan winter alone.
The November story
November Nako is only for the traveler who has planned specifically for this and accepted the risks. The half-frozen lake, with ice crystals forming geometric patterns on the surface, is photographically extraordinary. The village, smoke rising from every chimney, has a medieval quality. The monastery's winter prayers, conducted in cold rooms by dedicated monks, are the definition of devotional commitment. If you can arrange a homestay, the family will feed you, keep you warm, and share stories of this extraordinary existence at 3662m on the edge of Tibet. The road may or may not cooperate—plan for delays. Mobile signal, already weak in summer, becomes nonexistent. You are as remote as India gets.
