Lonar Crater in May
Maharashtra, India
Skip May — year's harshest, bare exposed rim 44°C; reschedule entirely to Oct-Feb.
May at Lonar Crater is Vidarbha-summer at peak — 28-44°C, dry westerly loo winds blowing dust off the plateau, the bare-exposed rim with zero shade becoming life-threatening past 8am, the crater bowl baking under direct sun. The alkaline Lonar Lake (pH 10-11) at its lowest level of the year; some white salt crusting visible on shores. The 10th c Chalukyan Daityasudan temple still standing but visits dawn-only. MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort sees minimal tourists. Don't come.
The May story
Don't come. The crater is a globally unique geological site, May conditions life-threatening. The smart play: reschedule for Oct-Feb when the 6 km rim circuit and lake descent become genuinely rewarding. If circumstances absolutely force a May visit, restrict to dawn-dash only (Aurangabad leave 4am, on-rim by 7:30am, off by 9am, AC car back). Skip rim circumnavigation entirely (6 km exposed). Skip lake descent entirely. Photograph Daityasudan temple basalt detail and the western viewpoint crater-bowl shot, then leave. Hotels at year-low — MTDC, Hotel Krishna basic. Aurangabad connector hotels (Vivanta, Welcomhotel, Lemon Tree) all 50%+ discounted. The alkaline lake level visible from the rim is itself scientifically interesting — but visiting in 44°C makes proper appreciation impossible. Buddha Purnima May 26 2026 is not a Lonar-relevant festival.
