Lonar Crater
Maharashtra · Marathwada · 475m
The world's only meteoric crater in basaltic rock — 50,000 years old, saline and alkaline
Why Special
Lonar Crater is a geological wonder — a 1.8km wide, 150m deep crater created by a meteorite impact 50,000 years ago. It's the only known hypervelocity impact crater in basaltic rock on Earth (most are in sedimentary rock). The lake inside is both saline and alkaline — it turned pink in 2020 due to algal bloom, making international news. Ancient temples dot the crater rim. NASA and the Geological Survey of India have studied it.
