January at Lonar Crater is peak — 11-28°C, dry Vidarbha plateau air, the only known hypervelocity impact crater in basaltic rock on Earth at peak walking conditions. The crater is 1.83 km wide, 137m deep, formed roughly 50,000-570,000 years ago (geological estimates vary; recent studies suggest Pleistocene). The lake inside is uniquely both saline AND alkaline — the only such water body globally. The 10th c Chalukya Daityasudan temple (dedicated to Vishnu's avatar who slew demon Lonasura) sits on the rim, alongside several smaller temples. The January story
Stay 1-2 nights at MTDC Lonar Tourist Resort (basic but on-rim, ₹2,000-3,000) or Hotel Krishna in Lonar town. Aurangabad 145 km away as connector base (3-4 hr drive via NH-65 + state roads). Plan rim circumnavigation (6 km loop) starting 7am for cool dawn light — the entire crater visible from multiple viewpoints. Descend to lake (1.5 hr down, 2 hr up) via the eastern path past Daityasudan temple. The lake is alkaline pH 10-11 — don't drink. Boating prohibited (ecological reserve). Birdwatching excellent at Sita Nahani waterfall (active monsoon, dry winter but ravine still birdy). Mining village 1 km north has eateries (basic). Combine with Aurangabad-Ajanta-Ellora circuit (4-5 day arc: Aurangabad 2 days, Lonar 1-2 days, return). The geological visit requires 4-6 hours minimum to walk rim properly.
