Lolab Valley in March
Jammu & Kashmir, India
March sees the snow begin retreating from Lolab Valley's lower stretches. The first green patches appear in meadows. Streams start flowing again—sometimes dramatically, with snowmelt creating temporary waterfalls. Days reach 4-12°C. The road from Kupwara clears for regular vehicles. Early spring flowers push through the thawing ground.
The March story
March is the transition that makes Lolab photographers lose their minds. Snow-capped ridges above, green meadows emerging below, cherry and almond blossoms starting in the villages—the valley is a patchwork of seasons existing simultaneously. The Kalaroos caves become accessible for the first time since November. These limestone caves, at about 3 km length, have genuine archaeological significance though they're minimally maintained. The walnut orchards start budding. Birdlife returns—you might spot Himalayan griffon vultures, golden eagles, and several species of laughingthrush. Still almost zero tourist presence. Homestay families are especially welcoming after a long winter with few visitors.
