May is survival mode. Temperatures hit 38°C to 45°C, occasionally touching 47°C in late May. The air is so dry your lips crack within hours of landing. Jaipur essentially shuts down as a tourist destination — Amber Fort might see 1,000-2,000 visitors on a good day, mostly domestic day-trippers. The streets empty between 11AM and 5PM. Loo winds (hot desert gusts) blow through the city carrying fine sand that gets into everything. This is the month when locals say "bahar mat jaao" — don't go outside. They're not being dramatic.
The May story
There is genuinely no tourist reason to visit Jaipur in May. The forts are dangerously hot — the stone surfaces at Amber Fort can reach 60°C and will burn exposed skin. Hawa Mahal's famous wind-catching design was literally built for this month, channeling whatever breeze exists into the zenana quarters, but you'd need to be inside (which you can't fully access) to appreciate it. If you're stuck here for work or transit, your survival kit is: hotel pool, AC mall (World Trade Park or GT Central), and evening rooftop dining after 7:30PM when temps drop to a merely unpleasant 38°C. The mango season is the one genuine consolation — Rajasthani safeda mangoes are extraordinary and available from street vendors at 60-100 rupees per kilo. Hotel rates hit their annual floor: 2,000-4,000 per night for properties that charge 12,000 in January. The government periodically issues heat wave advisories. Drink ORS, not just water. Carry a wet cloth. Take May Jaipur seriously — heatstroke hospitalizations are a real and regular occurrence.
