April is when Jaipur starts testing your commitment. Temperatures jump to 25°C to 38°C, and by the second half of the month, the afternoons are properly brutal. The city empties of tourists — both international and domestic — dropping to maybe 3,000-5,000 daily visitors at Amber Fort. The pink sandstone that looks gorgeous in winter now radiates stored heat like an oven. Forts become morning-only propositions: 8AM to 11AM, then retreat to air conditioning. The upside? Hotel rates crater — 2,500-6,000 for rooms that cost triple in January. If you run hot and budget matters, April is your window.
The April story
April Jaipur is liveable if you restructure your day around the heat. Wake early, hit Amber Fort at opening (8AM), be done by 10:30AM, retreat to a pool or AC room until 4:30PM, then emerge for evening exploration. Nahargarh Fort at sunset is actually less crowded and more atmospheric in April — the dusty haze creates pink-gold light that photographers call "Rajasthan magic hour." The bazaars operate on summer hours: morning rush from 9-11AM, dead 12-4PM, evening revival 5-8PM. Lassi becomes medicine rather than treat — Lassiwala's thick sweet lassi is 40 rupees of survival. The Jantar Mantar astronomical instruments cast their most dramatic shadows in April's high sun, which is ironic and useful. Museum lovers should prioritize the Albert Hall Museum (air-conditioned, 200 rupees, excellent collection) and the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing in Amber (100 rupees, beautifully curated). Stay hydrated obsessively — 4-5 litres per day minimum. SMS Hospital and Fortis are both excellent if heat exhaustion hits.
